We begin our family vacation this Friday. We are headed up to Grass Valley to visit with Jeff's parents for a few days and then down to Mammoth with Jeff's brother, Mike, to finish out the rest of our vacation. While in Mammoth we plan to do some relaxing, fishing, hiking, and whatever else comes our way. In addition to all that, however, we have one thing on the agenda that trumps all: the search for the lost cement mine (gold!!). Yes, Jeff finally got me excited about gold mining!
A few months ago, Jeff located a book called, hard to believe, "The Lost Cement Mine." This book contains newspaper articles originally published in 1879, written by James W.A. Wright, a reporter from the San Francisco Daily Evening Post who visited the Mammoth area during the summer of 1879 and gives his daily accounts of his travel of the area and tells the stories of the many searches for this ledge of gold. Mark Twain even wrote a story about this lost ledge of gold!
Some say this lost cement mine was just a ruse to get people to the area, while others still have strong faith that it truly exists. No one knows for certain, but we can certainly have some fun searching for it...
